So a few years ago I started purchasing Dry Shampoo. You know, it comes in an aerosol can...kind of leaves a white residue on your scalp if you skip more than one day of hair washing. Really, I found it to be a fabulous product, she says sarcastically, that I continued to purchase and use, she says ever so seriously. Why do we do that? I'm not the only one, right?
Well several months ago, I decided I was over the dry shampoo. Not really because it didn't work great, but because I was tired of the fumes. Ya know the one's that occur when your spraying an aerosol can & leave you wishing you had a hazmat suit? The same one's that if your toddler happens to enter the bathroom anytime during or up to 20 minutes after the spraying, they will leave gasping for air....yeah, I was so over that! Now, even more recently as my hair is getting longer , I am over washing my hair every single day! So I needed an intervention...other than the hair cut that I've been turning to ever since I became a mom.
My intervention came in the form of baking cocoa....well cocoa and a few other items that create dry shampoo! In a non-aerosol form . The "recipe" I found comes from here, it literally took me just a few minutes to throw together.
Dry Shampoo for brown hair:
1/4 cup cornstarch ( I used arrowroot instead)
1 Tbls baking cocoa (make sure its unsweetened)
2 Tbls Cocoa Powder
Simply mix the ingredients together , if you have light hair just leave the cocoa out. Then use a makeup brush or your fingertips to dab where needed on your hair. Let it sit for about 3-5 minutes, I usually put it on before I start my makeup & once its done I brush it out.
I have also read a few posts where people add some lavender essential oil to the mix. I think this is a great idea , but the day before I made mine my 5 yr old accidentally knocked the lavender oil off the counter, which then broke and spilled all over our bathroom floor...so I had none to use. But now that I have some , I do think I will add a few drops.
My thoughts on this DIY Dry Shampoo?? I really like it a lot. In my initial "trial run", ya know, for the love of blogging, lets see how long we can go without washing our hair. I went 4 days! Hubs said my hair still looked and felt great, but he said "now you know, that's just gross, right?"...well maybe, but for me it saved me almost 3 hours of my week!! I will take it!
Sorry, I was really bad at taking pictures throughout my first week, so I only have a shot from Day 2 & 4, and 4 is a totally off chance picture that Hubs took of me across the room while I was putting our daughter in the carrier. I did wear my hair up the last part of day 4, but I think it still looks clean :)
